You’re planning the wedding you’ve been dreaming of for years. As you’re researching, you may be wondering how to pick a wedding theme. Or even if you need a theme at all. As someone who has gone through planning their own wedding, as well as others, here’s how to find out.
First and Foremost, Your Wedding is YOUR Wedding
Before you stress too much about the aesthetics, remember that this day is for you. It is not about pleasing others, following trends, or making it into magazines. The most important “theme” of your day should reflect you and your partner. I personally recommend thinking of it as a personal brand and a reflection of who you are and your relationship together. This makes each detail feel personalized and special.
Consider the Location and Time of Year
If you’ve decided that it’s important to you and your partner to have a cohesive look and feel, a theme might be a good idea. But don’t take that too literally. When you think about “theme,” do not think childhood birthday party, but rather a way to describe the general tone and vibes for your day. Some examples could be romantic, luxurious, or casual. The possibilities are endless, but to help get you started, think about the time of year and your venue. Is it rustic? Modern? Warm? Cold? Jotting down a list of adjectives to describe both how the location makes you feel, as well as how you want others to feel on your day is a good place to start.
Align With Your Wedding Photography Style
After you’ve considered when and where the wedding is taking place, an important next step in ensuring a cohesive aesthetic and theme is aligning your vision with your photographer’s editing style. Even if all the colors, decor, flowers, location and attire are all aligned, if the photography style is not, your photos may not reflect the vision you created. The best way to solve for this is to reflect on the themes you identify when looking at their portfolio. Most photographers have branded themselves in a chosen style so the good news is that if you gravitate towards the themes of the weddings they typically capture, it is likely it will align with your vision. Either way, it is an important check as the photos will be one of the few elements of your wedding day that will live on well after the day.
Finally, Fill in the Details
Last but not least, after you have the big details feeling connected, just fill in the details. Having fun in this part is key, but don’t go overboard. Keep your budget in check and again, the most important detail is that you are celebrating your love with your partner. Don’t stress, and be sure to have fun!
